Our Master Fudhayl bin `Iyyadh

[Taken from Mawlana Zakariyya's History of the Shaykhs of Chisht, translated by the Majlis al-Ulama of South Africa, may Allah reward them all for benefitting us with such a beautiful book... the selection has been edited by me slightly. The original can be found at http://books.themajlis.net/node/484]

Shaykh Fudhayl bin `Iyadh

His nicknames are Abu Ali and Abul Fadhl. Some have also mentioned Abul Faydh. His original homeland was Kufa. He was born in Samarqand or Bukhaara.

Besides being the Khalifah of Shaykh Abdul Wahid, he also acquired khilafate from Abu Iydh bin Mansur bin Ma’mar Salami who was the khalifah of Muhammad bin Habib who was the khalifah of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (radhiyallahu anhu). In this way this Silsilah reached Rasulullah (صلى الله عايه وسالم) through the medium of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (radhiyallahu anhu).

He fasted continuously, not eating for five days at a time (besides merely breaking the fast at the time of iftaar). He would perform 500 raka’ts Salaat every day. The author of Anwarul Arifin narrates that once Shaykh Fudhayl washed a limb twice by error in wudhu instead of thrice. At night he saw Rasulullah (صلى الله عايه وسالم) telling him in a dream:

“Fudhayl, it is not expected of you to omit my Sunnat in wudhu.”

His eyes opened with shock and fear. To compensate for the omission and as a penance he imposed 500 raka’ts Salat on himself daily for a full year.

In the beginning (before he entered Suluk), Fudhayl bin Iyadh was the leader of a band of highway robbers. All members of his band always were in his company. Inspite of his profession of brigandry, he was strict in performing Salat with Jama'ah, Nafl Prayers and Sawm (fasting).

Once on a mission of robbery, he heard someone reciting this aayat:

“What! Has the time not dawned on the Believers for their hearts to melt for the dhikr of Allah?”

The effect of this aayat on his heart reduced him to tears and sobbing. He repeatedly said:

“Yes, the time has arrived and I have turned to Allah.”

* When Allah Ta’ala wishes something to happen, He creates the appropriate conditions for it. From the very inception of his profession, he would keep a proper account of the details of whomever he and his band robbed. The amount, name, etc. were recorded. This record proved highly beneficial when he repented and abandoned his evil profession. He made amends and compensated everyone whom he had robbed.

However, one Jew refused to forgive him, claiming that the bag which was taken from him was filled with gold. No matter how many oaths Shaykh Fudhayl took, the Jew was adamant in his refusal. Finally the Jew said:

“I have already taken an oath not to forgive you as long as you do not give me the bag full of gold. Therefore, enter my house and you will see a box in which there is a bag of gold. Bring it to me so that my oath can be discharged. I shall then forgive you.”

Shaykh Fudhayl brought the bag to the Jew. When the Jew opened the bag, it was full of gold. He then said:

“I was convinced of your sincere repentance. This bag had contained pebbles. I have read in the Taurah that even sand will turn into gold in the hands of a person who repents sincerely.”

The Jew then accepted Islam.

* One day Shaykh Fudhayl passed by a caravan. The people of the caravan were speaking among themselves and were saying that in this area there is a notorious robber named Fudhayl. The people were full of fear as the caravan had to journey through the territory where Fudhayl’s band of robbers formerly operated. Hadhrat Fudhayl hearing this conversation said:

“Good news for you. Fudhayl has repented. He now fears you and flees from you just as you fear him.”

* Khwajah Fudhayl migrated to Kufa after his repentance and stayed for some time in the company of Imam Abu Hanifah (rahmatullahi alayh). With the intention of becoming bay’ah to Imam Hasan Basri (rahmatullahi alayh), he went to Basrah. When he reached Basrah, to his dismay he discovered that Imam Hasan (rahmatullah alayh) had passed away. He, therefore, became the murid of Shaykh Abdul Wahid bin Zayd (rahmatullahi alayh).

* He earned a livelihood for himself and his family by working as a water-carrier, filling water for people in their homes.

* Khwajah Abu Ali said:
“I stayed thirty years in Shaykh Fudhayl’s company, but saw him laugh only once.”

* Imam Ahmad Bin Hanbal (rahmatullahi alayh) said that he heard Shaykh Fudhayl (rahmatullahi alayh) say:
“He who pursues leadership will be disgraced.”

When Imam Ahmad requested for nasihah (sincere advice), Shaykh Fudhayl said:
“Remain insignificant. Do not live as a great man.”

* Hadhrat Fudhayl said:
“He who acquires the Ma’rifah (gnosis) of Allah Ta’ala without love will be destroyed by pride. He who acquires Khawf (fear) without love, will find himself off from Allah by terror and despondency.”

Cultivation of divine fear tempered with love for Allah results in qurb (nearness to Allah). Allah Ta’ala will honour a man of such fear and love.

 “Iman (faith) becomes perfect only when one fulfils all commands, abstains from all prohibitions, is contented with the decrees of taqdeer and fears the possibility of divine rejection.”

 “To abstain from doing an act to show others is riya (showing off) and doing an act to show others is shirk (polytheism).”

 “If you live in a place where you see no people nor does anyone see you, then you are most fortunate.”

 “I am grateful to a man who does not greet me nor visits me when I am sick.”

 “Of greater surprise than seeing someone crying in Jannah (paradise) is to see someone laughing on earth.”

 “Never hope to find three persons: An Alim who practises according to the degree of his knowledge; a person who has ikhlas (sincierity) according to the degree of the his virtuous deeds; a brother who is without fault. You will never find these three.”

In other words, if you search for perfection in human beings, you will be deprived of the acquisition of goodness and benefit.

 “Two acts corrupt the heart: Sleeping much and eating much.”

 Once people asked for his opinion regarding the people of Arafat (Hajj). He responded:
“If Fudhayl is not among them, they will be forgiven.”

 People asked: “When will friendship with Allah Ta’ala be perfect?” Fudhayl replied:
“When Allah’s bestowing and withholding (of bounties) are equal in one’s estimate.”

 “Allah Ta’ala afflicts worldly worry on the slave He loves and He grants worldly comfort to the one He dislikes.”

 “La’nah (curse) descends on a man who professes friendship for a brother while his heart hates him. Such a person may become blind and deaf.”

 Once while he was sitting in the Masjid, a man came and sat close to him. When Shaykh Fudhayl asked his reason for sitting by him, the man replied: “To derive spiritual love from your heart.” Fudhayl said:
“This is terror, not love. Either you leave or I shall leave.”

The man reluctantly departed.

 Once in Arafat, crying and sobbing, Hadhrat Fudhayl looked towards the sky as the sun was about to set. Holding his beard, he exclaimed:
“Even if you (i.e. himself) are forgiven, you will be a great embarrassment for me.”

 “People! Always be grateful for the bounties of Allah. Seldom has Allah Ta’ala re-instated the favours which he had snatched from people.”

 “Even if the entire world is bestowed to me with the assurance that no reckoning will be taken, then too, I shall abhor it just as you abhor a dead animal carcass.”

 “Entry into the world is simple. Emergence from it is difficult.”

 “A man who desires that people listen attentively to his discourses is not a Zahid (one who has renounced the world).”

 “When someone slanders you, know that he is more beneficial to you than a friend because he transfers his virtuous deeds to you (by slandering you).”

 “Once when Sufyan Bin Uyaynah (rahmatullahi alayh) visited Shaykh Fudhayl, he (Fudhal) said:
“At one time you, the Ulama, were the lanterns (of guidance) for the cities. But now, you are darkness for the cities. You (at one time) were for people stars of guidance like the stars in the heaven by means of which people acquire their direction. Now, you have become for the world a source of confusion. You (the Ulama) have no shame for Allah. You visit the wealthy and accept their gifts without investigating whether halaal or haraam. Then you stand in the mihrab narrating Ahadith.”

While Shaykh Fudhayl was admonishing, Sufyan with lowered head was reciting Istighfar (seeking forgiveness from Allah Ta’ala).

 He said:
“Sayyiduna Luqman (alayhis salaam) who was an Abyssinian slave, was the Judge of Bani Isra'il. He acquired this rank by abstaining from futile speech and acts, and by the truth of his tongue.”

 “If the Ulama adopt Zuhd, the necks of great oppressors will bend in submission infront of them. But, Alas! They spend their knowledge on the affluent people of the world in exchange for worldly gain. They (Ulama) have, therefore fallen in the estimate of people.”

 “One who indulges in association with people will most certainly be trapped in riya (show).”

 “I lament the Alim with whom the world plays. If the hearts of the people of the Qur’aan and Hadith (i.e. the Ulama) become disenchanted with the world, people will not be able to manipulate them.”

 “My heart is agitated greatly when I hear that an Alim or an Abid went for Hajj with the money of a trader.”

 “If the intention for the acquisition of Ilm is correct, then there is no superior act (than the acquisition of knowledge). But, generally, the intention for pursuing of knowledge is not amal (righteous deeds).”

His Demise
Shaikh Fudhayl Bin Iyadh (rahmatullahi alayh) died in the Haram Sharif of Makkah on the 3rd of Rabiul Awwal in 187 Hijri and is buried in Jannatul Mu’alla (the graveyard in Makkah Mukarramah). His grave is near to the grave of Our Mother Khadijah (radhiyallahu anha). Some people claim that he had died in the month of Muharram.

When he heard a Qari reciting القارعة (Al-Qariah), he let out a heart-piercing scream and died. Hadhrat Abdullah Bin Mubarak says that when Hadhrat Fudhail passed away, the heavens cried and an ominous silence settled over the world.

Women and the US Military

A horrific story in the BBC on how female soldiers in the US Military have been faring in Iraq...

We should reflect on how our often times hypocritical and even nonsensical attitudes toward women in the West as well as the Muslim world can bear some revisiting and reflection...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8005198.stm

Women at war face sexual violence

Female US soldier (file picture)
Over 206,000 US women have served in the Middle East since March 2003

In her new book, The Lonely Soldier: The Private War of Women Serving in Iraq, Helen Benedict examines the experience of female soldiers serving in the US military in Iraq and elsewhere.

Here, in an article adapted from her book, she outlines the threat of sexual violence that women face from their fellow soldiers while on the frontline, and provides testimony from three of the women she interviewed for her book.

More American women have fought and died in Iraq than in any war since World War II.

Over 206,000 have served in the Middle East since March 2003, most of them in Iraq. Some 600 have been wounded, and 104 have died.

Yet, even as their numbers increase, women soldiers are painfully alone.

In Iraq, women still only make up one in 10 troops, and because they are not evenly distributed, they often serve in a platoon with few other women or none at all.

This isolation, along with the military's traditional and deep-seated hostility towards women, can cause problems that many female soldiers find as hard to cope with as war itself - degradation and sexual persecution by their comrades, and loneliness instead of the camaraderie that every soldier depends on for comfort and survival.

Between 2006 and 2008, some 40 women who served in the Iraq War spoke to me of their experiences at war. Twenty-eight of them had been sexually harassed, assaulted or raped while serving.

They were not exceptions. According to several studies of the US military funded by the Department of Veteran Affairs, 30% of military women are raped while serving, 71% are sexually assaulted, and 90% are sexually harassed.

The Department of Defense acknowledges the problem, estimating in its 2009 annual report on sexual assault (issued last month) that some 90% of military sexual assaults are never reported.

The department claims that since 2005, its updated rape reporting options have created a "climate of confidentiality" that allows women to report without fear of being disbelieved, blamed, or punished, but the fact remains that most of the cases I describe in my book happened after the reforms of 2005.

CHANTELLE HENNEBERRY

Army specialist Chantelle Henneberry served in Iraq from 2005-6, with the 172nd Stryker Brigade out of Alaska.

I was the only female in my platoon of 50 to 60 men. I was also the youngest, 17.

Because I was the only female, men would forget in front of me and say these terrible derogatory things about women all the time.

I had to hear these things every day. I'd have to say 'Hey!' Then they'd look at me, all surprised, and say, 'Oh we don't mean you.'

I was less scared of the mortar rounds that came in every day than I was of the men who shared my food
Chantelle Henneberry

One of the guys I thought was my friend tried to rape me. Two of my sergeants wouldn't stop making passes at me.

Everybody's supposed to have a battle buddy in the army, and females are supposed to have one to go to the latrines with, or to the showers - that's so you don't get raped by one of the men on your own side.

But because I was the only female there, I didn't have a battle buddy. My battle buddy was my gun and my knife.

During my first few months in Iraq, my sergeant assaulted and harassed me so much I couldn't take it any more. So I decided to report him.

But when I turned him in, they said, 'The one common factor in all these problems is you. Don't see this as a punishment, but we're going to have you transferred.'

Then that same sergeant was promoted right away. I didn't get my promotion for six months.

They transferred me from Mosul to Rawah. There were over 1,500 men in the camp and less than 18 women, so it wasn't any better there than the first platoon I was in. I was fresh meat to the hungry men there.

I was less scared of the mortar rounds that came in every day than I was of the men who shared my food.

I never would drink late in the day, even though it was so hot, because the Port-a-Johns were so far away it was dangerous.

So I'd go for 16 hours in 140-degree heat and not drink. I just ate Skittles to keep my mouth from being too dry.

I collapsed from dehydration so often I have IV track lines from all the times they had to re-hydrate me.

MICKIELA MONTOYA

Army specialist Mickiela Montoya served in Iraq for 11 months from 2005-6, with the California National Guard. She was 19 years old.

The whole time I was in Iraq I was in a daze the whole time I was there 'cause I worked nights and I was shot at every night.

Mortars were coming in - and mortars is death! When they say only men are allowed on the front lines, that's the biggest crock of shit! I was a gunner! But when I say I was in the war, nobody listens. Nobody believes I was a soldier. And you know why? Because I'm a female.

There are only three things the guys let you be if you're a girl in the military - a bitch, a ho, or a dyke. You're a bitch if you won't sleep with them. A ho if you've even got one boyfriend. A dyke if they don't like you. So you can't win.

Mickiela Montoya (Picture Credit: Emma O'Connor)
I wasn't carrying the knife for the enemy, I was carrying it for the guys on my own side
Mickiela Montoya

A lot of the men didn't want us there. One guy told me the military sends women soldiers over to give the guys eye-candy to keep them sane.

He told me in Vietnam they had prostitutes, but they don't have those in Iraq, so they have women soldiers instead.

At the end of my shift one night, I was walking back to my trailer with this guy who was supposed to be my battle buddy when he said: 'You know, if I was to rape you right now nobody could hear you scream, nobody would see you. What would you do?'

'I'd stab you.'

'You don't have a knife,' he said to me.

'Oh yes I do.'

Actually I didn't have one, but after that, I always carried one.

I practiced how to take it out of my pocket and swing it out fast. But I wasn't carrying the knife for the enemy, I was carrying it for the guys on my own side.

MARTI RIBEIRO

Air Force Sergeant Marti Ribeiro was assaulted by a fellow serviceman while she was on duty in Afghanistan in 2006.

It's taken me more than a year to realise that it wasn't my fault, so I didn't tell anyone about it.

The military has a way of making females believe they brought this upon themselves. That's wrong.

There's an unwritten code of silence when it comes to sexual assault in the military.

But if this happened to me and nobody knew about it, I know it's happening to other females as well.

Smells Like Fish and Tastes Like non-Zabihah Chicken

[See News Article Below]

Let me get this straight. The Federal Reserve Bank, which is a privately owned, held, and run bank, and to quote Dennis Kucinich is "as federal as Federal Express," is allowed the sole perrogative to, among other ridiculous things, print US Currency.

This printing of currency, they do at NO cost to themselves, and without any outside authority to regulate their actions.

They have just recently and "most magnanimously" decided to issue ONE TRILLION DOLLARS (again, at no cost to themselves), and LOAN it to the seemingly moronic government of our country at interest.

This will supposedly somehow help out our economy (in the same way that a brigand in Karachi, when he robs you of your money and cell phone, will help you out by returning your SIM card to you so that you don't lose your phone numbers).

Recap: $1,000,000,000,000 when divided by a population of about 305,000,000 comes out to a magically wonderful $3278.69 per person "Stimulus Check" that this private bank has magically cut itself (plus interest).

Many people criticize the Shari'ah conception of an economy in which transactions must be conducted in real commodities and assets, and in which there can be no usury. They call it medieval and say that it is not practical in the modern world. I say to them, that if this is modernity, then they are more than welcome to foot my half of the bill that this fradulent "loan" will see me incurr.

This brings up another point. That is that "Islamic Finance." Without entering the debate on whether or not certain products out on the market are compliant or not, I would like to say that, ultimately, "Islamic Finance" doesn't mean going to a conventional bank and getting a "Shari'ah-Compliant" product. It means having a different market place which from day one operates on shar'iah-based principals and transacting in it.

THIS IS AS IMPORTANT AS BUILDING A MASJID AND PRAYING IN IT, RATHER THAN HOLDING JUMU'AH (Friday Prayers) IN A CHURCH OR SYNAGOGUE.

It comes that our Messenger, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, after first arriving in Madinah, the radiant city, made arrangements for the masjid to be built. That much is well-known.

Slightly less well-known, is that after that, he asked the Ansar, may Allah be well pleased with them all, where they traded. They responded that they had no market of their own, rather they would go to the markets of the local Jewish community, where the Jews would fix their own prices for goods and buy and sell according to their laws and interests. Note that doing so was their right, and a smart and wise thing to do as well.

As the Hadith goes: "Wisdom is the lost property of the believer; wherever he finds it, he has a right to it," so the messenger of Allah, upon whom be peace, then proceeded to establish a separate market place for his believing companions, Allah be pleased with them, so that they could establish a system that reflected the virtues of a divinely-ordained system of ethics, justice, and fairness.

Fed to buy long-term U.S. government debt

Wed Mar 18, 2009 4:49pm EDT

By Mark Felsenthal and Alister Bull

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Federal Reserve on Wednesday said it would pump an additional $1 trillion into the U.S. economy to try to pull it out of a deep recession, partly by buying longer-term government debt for the first time in more than 40 years.

In a statement at the end of a regular two-day policy meeting, the central bank's panel said it would buy up to $300 billion in longer-term Treasuries.

The decision caught many off guard. While the Fed has said it was considering such a move, it had seemed to be backing away from it recent weeks. As recently as March 6, New York Fed President William Dudley had said such a move would not be the most efficient way to ease market conditions.

The surprise announcement jolted markets. U.S. stocks shot higher and yields on U.S. government bonds took their biggest one-day tumbled since 1987, while the dollar plunged to a two-month low against the euro.

"When the Fed said it would 'employ all available means' to jump-start the recovery and prevent deflation it wasn't kidding," said Sal Guatieri of BMO Capital Markets in Toronto.

In addition to purchasing Treasury debt, the Fed said it would expand by $850 billion to $1.45 trillion an existing program to buy debt and securities issued by mortgage finance agencies.

The expansion of the program, which already had lowered mortgage rates, immediately pushed borrowing costs down further. Quicken Loans said rates on 30-year mortgages fell as much as 0.375 percentage point to 5 percent.

RATES NEAR ZERO

The Bank of England's recent success in driving interest rates down by buying government debt may have been a factor in the U.S. central bank's decision to buy longer-term Treasuries -- a strategy it last deployed in the 1960s.

By driving down yields on benchmark government debt, the Fed hopes to lower a wide array of borrowing costs for consumers and businesses.

"This is a pretty dramatic move ... They are trying to bring down all consumer rates," said James Caron, head of global rates research at Morgan Stanley in New York.

In addition to ramping up its efforts to pump money into the recession-struck economy, the Fed unanimously decided to hold its target for overnight interest rates in a zero to 0.25 percent range -- the level reached in December. One Fed official, Richmond Federal Reserve Bank President Jeffrey Lacker, returned to the fold after dissenting in January.

The Fed said rates would stay low for "an extended period," a more explicit vow to stay on hold with rates for a prolonged time than it had offered in recent months.

CREDIT EASING II

With benchmark interest rates virtually at zero for months, the Fed has turned its focus to flooding stressed credit markets with cash in the hope of restarting lending and restoring growth -- a policy Fed chief Ben Bernanke has dubbed "credit easing."

"Bottom line is the Fed is adding a trillion dollars to their balance sheet and that's a lot of taxpayer money," said Greg Salvaggio, vice president for trading at Tempus Consulting in Washington.

Bernanke on Sunday said repairing the tattered financial system was necessary to secure a recovery for the U.S. economy, which has been stuck in recession for more than a year.

The Fed this week began taking bids for a program designed to spur student, auto, credit card and small business lending, and it said on Wednesday it would consider expanding that program to cover a wider array of assets.

The consumer and small business credit program will initially aim to inject $200 billion into the market for securities backed by these loans, but the Fed has already said that program could be ramped up to $1 trillion.

While the Fed has gone to extraordinary lengths to try to get credit flowing, the economy is still in a nose dive.

U.S. gross domestic product shrank at a 6.2 percent annual rate in the fourth quarter, the deepest contraction since early 1982, and economists expect a decline of 5 percent or more in the first quarter. The unemployment rate, which has already hit a 25-year high of 8.1 percent, is expected to climb through the year.

What Would an Orientalist Say About Star Wars?

The following like was forwarded to me by a young man. It is an analysis of Star Wars, which claims that within the movie, there is no such thing as the force.

This seemingly ridiculous and stupid piece of writing is actually full of wisdom, in a Mullah Nasruddin Khwaja type of way (that is Juha for some of the Arabs).

It is an Orientalist-style refutation of the Star Wars narrative, which is at the same time, seemingly logical, while being wrapped in stupidity through and through. Like Nasruddin Khawajah, rahimahullah, it teaches us about truth and wisdom by showing us what truth and wisdom aren't.

As silly as it may seem, I recommend that anyone who has studied hadith and orientalism, and has also seen Star Wars, take a glance...

Sayyiduna Umar and Sayyiduna `Uthman and Love for the Ahl al-Bayt

Hafidh al-Maghrib al-Imam al-Qadhi Abu Umar Yusuf bin `Abd il-Barr relates in his al-Isti'ab fi Ma'rifat al-Ashab:

وروى ابن أبي الزناد عن أبيه عن الثقة أن العباس بن عبد المطلب لم يمر بعمر ولا بعثمان وهما راكبان إلا نزلا حتى يجوز العباس إجلالاً له ويقولان: عم النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم

"
Ibn Abi Zinad narrates on the authority of his father [who is a trustworth narrator of the highest degree according to none other than Imam Malik, agreed to be the most stringent of the muhaddithin when it came to chosing the very few that he would relate from in his Muwatta] who narrates from a trustworthy source that `Abbas bin `Abdil Muttalib never once passed by `Umar or `Uthman, may Allah be pleased with them all, when they were mounted, except that they would dismount in his honor while `Abbas passed, saying "... the uncle of the prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam)..."

How beautiful is it that despite both being cousins of the Nabi, sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam, and Sayyiduna `Umar being his father-in-law and Sayyiduna`Uthman being to him such a son-in-law that he married two daughters to him in succession and after the death of the second declared that had he yet another daughter, he would have married her to `Uthman, despite all of those things, they found love in everything that reminded them, may Allah be pleased with the, of the messenger of Allah. Everything.

Everything that reminds us of Rasulallah, sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam is beautiful. It is so that we realize that the beauty of all of those sunnahs that we honor are not because of their intrinsic value, but because of their nisbah to him.

In it is a fragrant lesson for us.

Honorary Turban Award Winner: Tayyib Rajab Erdoghan

Ghayrah is an Arabic word that has many simultaneous meanings; at once it is honor, courage, fierceness and loyalty. It is that human quality which is enraged when someone's mother is insulted which inspires him to bust a whup on someone bigger and stronger than him, who otherwise would have trashed him in a fight (Note, I do not encourage violence of any type, especially when said violence is in infraction of the law...).

It is interesting that one of the mashayikh, while trying to explain what it means in English, paused and lamented: "It is difficult to explain what ghayrah means, because.... no one here has it." It is telling that one of the most cutting insults that one can use against a person in many countries is to say that they have no ghayrah (Farsi, Urdu, Pashto, Punjabi: Be-ghayrat).

Well, unfortunately many muslims have lost their ghayrah for what Allah and his messenger, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon them. Such a state, although it is far from overcoming the Muslims, has definately become the status quo of our elite ruling classes, and especially the persons of our rulers.

But this post is not a negative one. I will not impugn the sad state of affairs in Muslim countries and the fact that their rulers more resemble proxy colonial governers than government for the people, by the people, of the people.

No rather today we honor one person, who for a moment, at least, acted like a man. A person who despite being clean shaven and wearing a suit at the time, is receiving an honorary turban for breaking the trend of Muslim rulers en vogue today, and not acting like a total be-ghayrat.

Talking crap about Israel is nothing new among Muslim leaders. In fact, it is usually what they do to fire up a crowd and score some cheap votes by making empty gestures of solidarity with the Palestinians at the expense of the the very real blood they shed daily. However, it takes guts to say that to the face of the sitting Israeli president, who unlike most Israeli presidents, wields some political clout. And all of that too, in a world economic summit!

I have pasted the story below, and you can follow this link to see the video too:

Turkey PM storms off in Gaza row

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has stormed off the stage at the World Economic Forum in Davos after an argument with Israel's president.

Mr Erdogan clashed with Shimon Peres in a discussion on the recent fighting in the Gaza Strip, telling him: "You are killing people."

Mr Peres said Mr Erdogan would have done the same had rockets hit Istanbul.

Mr Erdogan accused the moderator of not allowing him to speak and said he did not think he would return to Davos.

He was cut off as he attempted to reply to a passionate defence of Israel's actions made by Mr Peres.

Turkey is one of the few Muslim countries to have dealings with Israel, but relations have been under strain since the Islamist-rooted AK Party was elected to power in 2002.

"I do not think I will be coming back to Davos after this because you do not let me speak," Mr Erdogan shouted before marching off the stage in front of Mr Peres, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and an elite audience of ministers and international officials.

He criticised the moderator for cutting him short on the grounds that the debate had gone over time.

Mr Peres had told the audience Israel was forced on to the offensive against Hamas by thousands of rockets and mortars fired into Israel.

"The tragedy of Gaza is not Israel, it is Hamas," the Israeli leader said. "They created a dictatorship. A very dangerous one."

More than 1,300 Palestinians and 14 Israelis were killed during the three-week conflict which began on 27 December.

Mawlana Muhammad Mazhar ibn Lutf ‘Ali ibn Muhammad Hasan al-Siddiqi al-Hanafi Nanautwi (1238/1823)—the righteous imam, ‘arif (knower of Allah) and mujahid—was amongst the leading scholars of fiqh, hadith, and tasawwuf in his time.

A descendant of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), he was born in Nanautah, a village in the district of Saharanpur (UP, India). He initially studied under his father with whom he completed the memorization of the Qur’an (hifz). He then travelled to Delhi, where he studied under Shaykh Sadr al-Din Dehlawi, Shaykh Rashid al-Din, the teacher of many shaykhs Mawlana Mamluk al-‘Ali Nanautwi, Mawlana Ahmad ‘Ali Saharanpuri and Shah ‘Abd al-Ghani Dehlawi. He studied some books of hadith from the renowned scholar of hadith Shah Muhammad Ishaq Dehlawi, the great grandson of Shah Wali Allah Dehlawi and successor of Shah ‘Abd al-‘Aziz Dehlawi.

After studying in Delhi, Mawlana Muhammad Mazhar Nanautwi occupied himself in correcting manuscripts (tashih) at the publishing house of Nawlkashur. Later he taught Islamic sciences at Ajmer College, and then at Agra College.

The Battle Of Shamli

In 1273/1857, Mawlana Muhammad Mazhar fought against the British in the Battle of Shamli under the leadership of Haji Imdad Allah Muhajir Makki, and alongside senior scholars such as Mawlana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi, Mawlana Qasim Nanautwi, Hafiz Damin Shahid, Mawlana Rahmat Allah Kiranwi and his own younger brother Mawlana Muhammad Munir Nanautwi. It was in this battle that he sustained serious wounds.

Mufti Mahmud Hasan Gangohi relates:

‘‘It was the habit of Mawlana Mazhar Nanautwi that he would often lick his upper lip. Someone once asked him the reason for this, but the respected Mawlana did not inform him. When this person insisted, Mawlana remarked, ‘When the battle against the British took place at Shamli, and the Muslims were being attacked, some of my comrades were dying and my leg was also hit by a bullet (due to which it became paralysed). In this state, I saw Hurs (damsels of Paradise) with glasses in their hands. The glasses were filled with a special type of drink that they were giving to those of my fallen comrades who were dying and had no chance of surviving. As this was happening, one of the damsels came towards me. She had just placed a glass against my mouth when another damsel took hold of her hands, pulled them away [from me] and said, ‘‘he is not among those who are to pass away.” A very small amount of this drink fell on my upper lip, the [sweet] taste of which remains till today. This is why I have this habit [of licking my upper lip.]’ [2]

After the battle was over, Mawlana Muhammad Mazhar went into hiding at Bareilly. Once a general amnesty was declared, he emerged from hiding and thereafter began teaching at his home.

Teaching The Islamic Sciences

Many students studied fiqh, usul (principles of Islamic Law), kalam (scholastic theology), mantiq (Classical Logic), Arabic grammar and other related sciences from him.

In Shawwal 1283/February 1867, he was appointed headteacher at a madrasah founded in Saharanpur by Mawlana Sa‘adat ‘Ali Saharanpuri, the well-known jurist (faqih), who was a participant of the 1273/1857 jihad and a devoted follower of Shah Ahmad ibn ‘Irfan Barelwi—the martyr of Balakot.[3] When this madrasah progressed and an exclusive building was established for it, it was named Mazahir ‘Ulum in Mawlana Muhammad Mazhar’s honour. He exerted his efforts in teaching the Quran and Sunnah (hadith), and in disseminating knowledge and the Islamic sciences. He was also involved with the administration of Mazahir ‘Ulum at every level and taught there until the end of his life.

He had many outstanding students; most prominent amongst them was the eminent hadith scholar Mawlana Khalil Ahmad Saharanpuri. Mawlana Muhammad Qasim Nanautwi, founder of the renowned Islamic seminary, Dar al-‘Ulum Deoband, also studied some primary books under him.

He also assisted in completing Ghayat al-Awtar, the Urdu translation of Imam ‘Ala’ al-Din al-Haskafi’s Durr al-Mukhtar, as stated in its introduction by Mawlana Muhammad Ahsan Nanautwi.[4]

His Characteristics And The Spiritual Path

He treaded the path of tasawwuf under the guidance of Shaykh al-Sunnah Mawlana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi, who granted him permission (ijazah) to initiate others into the path. This despite him being older than his beloved shaykh.

Mawlana Qari Muhammad Tayyib Qasimi relates from his father, Mawlana Muhammad Ahmad:

‘‘Mawlana Muhammad Mazhar Nanautwi once saw Mawlana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi and Mawlana Qasim Nanautwi in a dream, sitting on a throne. Mawlana (who was older than the two shaykhs) relayed the dream in a letter to Haji Imdad Allah in which he also requested him to accept his bay‘ah (pledge of purification). In reply, Haji Imdad Allah interpreted the dream by instructing him to give bay‘ah to either one of the two [shaykhs]. Therefore, Mawlana Muhammad Mazhar brought the letter to Mawlana Qasim Nanautwi and requested him to accept his bay‘ah. Embarrassed, Mawlana Qasim Nanautwi replied, ‘Accept my bay‘ah instead!’ Mawlana Muhammad Mazhar remarked, ‘Here, this is the letter [of Haji Imdad Allah] and this is the instruction.’ Mawlana Qasim Nanautwi then said, ‘Let me give you some sound advice. Proceed to Gangoh.’ Mawlana Muhammad Mazhar went there. At first, Mawlana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi also declined. He, however, later accepted bay‘ah.’’ [5]

Mawlana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi would express his embarrassment at the love, respect and veneration afforded to him by Mawlana Muhammad Mazhar Nanautwi. Mawlana Muhammad Mazhar Nanautwi was a person of great insight (basirat). The respect he showed his shaykh due to his eminence and lofty rank, and the love he felt for him, was natural for him as a disciple. However, Mawlana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi was unable to disregard his disciple’s seniority in age and felt obliged to act according to the blessed words of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), ‘‘He who does not have mercy on our young, and does not respect our elders is not of us.’’ (Tirmidhi)

Mawlana Muhammad Mazhar Nanautwi was also granted ijazah in tasawwuf by Shaykh al-‘Ulama’ Haji Imdad Allah Muhajir Makki, in whose heart he held a special place, as indicated in his letters (maktubat).

Mawlana Muhammad Mazhar Nanautwi was from amongst the ascetic and righteous ‘ulama; he would be referred to in matters of fiqh. He was an erudite scholar of the rational (ma‘qul), literary (lughawi), and Islamic sciences, who embodied Shari‘ah and Tariqah. He would habitually use perfume when reciting the Quran in Tarawih prayers. He would refrain from affectation (takalluf) and was an awe-inspiring person; very few people would have the courage to speak in his presence. He was known for his simplicity, humbleness, piety, intelligence and wisdom.

Mawlana Sayyid Abu ‘l-Hasan ‘Ali Nadwi wrote of him:

‘‘He was a scholar of deep learning, who had mastery over the [Islamic] sciences. He gave bay‘ah to Imam Rashid Ahmad Ibn Hidayah Ahmad Gangohi, who granted him ijazah. He would recite the Qur’an often, would be constantly engaged in the remembrance of Allah, and his tongue would remain moist with [the utterance of] Ism al-Dhat (Allah). He remained aloof from affectation, was an ascetic of an austere nature, dignified and was awe-inspiring.’’ [6]

Shaykh al-Hadith Mawlana Muhammad Zakariyya writes in Tarikh-e-Mazahir ‘Ulum (History of Mazahir ‘Ulum):

‘‘Mawlana Mazhar Nanautwi had very close relationships with Mawlana Muhammad Qasim Nanautwi and Mawlana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi. Despite being senior in age to Mawlana Gangohi, he was from amongst his deputies (khalifahs) and beloved servants. In fact he was an ardent lover of Mawlana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi and was extremely devoted to him. He had great understanding of fiqh and hadith. He was an Allah-fearing, pious, soft-natured and virtuous saint. ’’[7]

Journeys on Hajj

His first Hajj—in which Mawlana Qasim Nanautwi and Mawlana Ya‘qub Nanautwi accompanied him—was performed in 1277/1861. He performed his second Hajj in 1294/1877 in the company of his shaykh Mawlana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi, Mawlana Qasim Nanautwi, Mawlana Ya‘qub Nanautwi, Mawlana Shah Rafi‘ al-Din, Shaykh al-Hind Mawlana Mahmud al-Hasan and others.

Famous Brothers

He had two brothers, both younger than him, who were accomplished scholars. The youngest, Mawlana Muhammad Munir Nanautwi, was a student of Shah ‘Abd al-Ghani Dehlawi and served as a principle of Dar al-‘Ulum Deoband for a short period. He also actively fought alongside senior ‘ulama in the battle of Shamli in 1273/1857. His academic works include an Urdu translation of Imam Ghazali’s Minhaj al-‘Abidin. He had a very close relationship with Hujjat al-Islam Mawlana Qasim Nanautwi and was particularly known for his knowledge, piety, honesty and integrity.

The elder of the two, Mawlana Muhammad Ahsan Nanautwi, was a prominent Hanafi jurist who translated a number of classical works. Unfortunately, in contrast to his brothers, elders and companions, Mawlana Muhammad Ahsan Nanautwi actively opposed the jihad of 1273/1857. Due to this, under duress of the local populace, he was forced to leave Bareilly, his town of residence. He returned later after the war ended. There, aided by his two brothers, Mawlana Muhammad Mazhar and Mawlana Muhammad Munir, he established a publishing house called Matba‘-e-Siddiqiyyah.[8] His translations include Imam Ghazali’s Ihya’ ‘Ulum al-Din. He translated and annotated Imam Nasafi’s Kanz al-Daqa’iq. He also annotated Shah Wali Allah Dehlawi’s Izalat al-Khifa’ ‘an Khilafat al-Khulafa’ and his magnus opus Hujjat Allah al-Balighah. These were all first published by Matba‘-e-Siddiqiyyah.

His teachers included Mawlana Mamluk al-‘Ali Nanautwi and the renowned hadith scholar Shah ‘Abd al-Ghani Dehlawi.

Final Illness And Death

Mawlana Muhammad Mazhar Nanautwi passed away at the age of sixty-four (Islamic years) after Maghrib prayers on the evening of Monday 24th Dhu ‘l-Hijjah 1302/October 1885. During his final illness, he would often touch his forehead searching for traces of sweat, as according to the prophetic hadith it is a sign of a believer’s death. When his death was near and he began sweating from his forehead, his face lit up with joy. He was not survived by any children.

May Allah enlighten his resting place. May Allah shower His mercy upon him and grant him, his teachers and students the highest stations in Paradise. Amin.

Muslims and Jews

I was graciously invited by the Jewish Day school to speak to an 8th grade class about various theological questions and how they are conceived of by Muslims... Firstly, Jewish kids are very smart and witty (when you compare then to the kids I went to public school with). Secondly, private school kids ask alot of questions. Thirdly, I must must admit that I generally enjoy meeting with conscientious and thoughtful people from those who are trying to be good Christians and Jews... Its always interesting. Please enjoy the email feedback received by someone who helped set this meeting up, from the students who attended my short talk...

Humza

PS: I was also asked about why all religious people have beards. I told them that the beauty of a man is in his beard. I said the cheetah is the fastest animal around, but why is he not the King of the Jungle? What makes the lion special [imagine at this point, Humza smugly running his hands through his luxurious black barba].

PPS: I also educated the young Israelites about a fact that their forefather Rabbis knew before them. That is that all [or at least alot of] the real Rabbis and, heck, cool people in general wear turbans (it helped that there was, right behind me, a big artist's rendering of the Rabbi Musa bin Maimun, aka, Rambam to the Rabbis, and aka, Maimonides to Reneissance Europe, wearing a turban that would put any sardarji in his place).

Mrs. XYZ Judaics Teacher Writes:

Dear ABC [The Muslim who arranged my talk]

I wanted to write to you to thank you again for organizing our God Talk visit at JDS. Yesterday, Imam Humza came (...) and we had a wonderful discussion with him and the 8th graders. It was a great discussion and I wanted to thank him again. Please pass on my gratitude and a few quotes from the responses of the students. This was an important event that has already contributed to Shalom, Salaam in our world.

Here are some of the responses:

“This shows me that I shouldn’t judge a nation on the actions of a few crazed people. If only because we are Jews, we know how it feels to be a victim of prejudice. People quickly judge a situation before truly understanding it. But maybe if we all took the time to understand what type of people Muslims are, we wouldn’t cower in fear of a man on the same airplane wearing a turban. Maybe if we took the time to understand every situation we encounter we might be able to control our actions better.”

“I really enjoyed this God Talk speaker because as well as being very interesting, it taught me to be a little less judgmental.”

Another student wrote, “… made me realize something, not all Germans were Nazis, not all Americans are obese, not all musicians lead messed up lives .. not all Muslims are terrorists..”

I am truly grateful to you and Imam Humza for making such a huge difference in the lives of my students and teaching them to love and respect all people. They learned an important lesson that will help the Children of Israel and the Children of Ishmael learn to live in pleace together..

Michael Moore's Ideas on the "Bailout"

[Not all in tune with Islamic ideals, but raises alot of important questions...]

Friends,

The richest 400 Americans -- that's right, just four hundred people --
own MORE than the bottom 150 million Americans combined. 400 rich
Americans have got more stashed away than half the entire country! Their
combined net worth is $1.6 trillion. During the eight years of the Bush
Administration, their wealth has increased by nearly $700 billion -- the
same amount that they are now demanding we give to them for the
"bailout." Why don't they just spend the money they made under Bush to
bail themselves out? They'd still have nearly a trillion dollars left
over to spread amongst themselves!

Of course, they are not going to do that -- at least not voluntarily.
George W. Bush was handed a $127 billion surplus when Bill Clinton left
office. Because that money was OUR money and not his, he did what the
rich prefer to do -- spend it and never look back. Now we have a $9.5
trillion debt. Why on earth would we even think of giving these robber
barons any more of our money?

I would like to propose my own bailout plan. My suggestions, listed
below, are predicated on the singular and simple belief that the rich
must pull themselves up by their own platinum bootstraps. Sorry,
fellows, but you drilled it into our heads one too many times: There...
is... no... free... lunch. And thank you for encouraging us to hate
people on welfare! So, there will be no handouts from us to you. The
Senate, tonight, is going to try to rush their version of a "bailout"
bill to a vote. They must be stopped. We did it on Monday with the
House, and we can do it again today with the Senate.

It is clear, though, that we cannot simply keep protesting without
proposing exactly what it is we think Congress should do. So, after
consulting with a number of people smarter than Phil Gramm, here is my
proposal, now known as "Mike's Rescue Plan." It has 10 simple,
straightforward points. They are:

1. APPOINT A SPECIAL PROSECUTOR TO CRIMINALLY INDICT ANYONE ON WALL
STREET WHO KNOWINGLY CONTRIBUTED TO THIS COLLAPSE. Before any new money
is expended, Congress must commit, by resolution, to criminally
prosecute anyone who had anything to do with the attempted sacking of
our economy. This means that anyone who committed insider trading,
securities fraud or any action that helped bring about this collapse
must go to jail. This Congress must call for a Special Prosecutor who
will vigorously go after everyone who created the mess, and anyone else
who attempts to scam the public in the future.

2. THE RICH MUST PAY FOR THEIR OWN BAILOUT. They may have to live in 5
houses instead of 7. They may have to drive 9 cars instead of 13. The
chef for their mini-terriers may have to be reassigned. But there is no
way in hell, after forcing family incomes to go down more than $2,000
dollars during the Bush years, that working people and the middle class
are going to fork over one dime to underwrite the next yacht purchase.

If they truly need the $700 billion they say they need, well, here is an
easy way they can raise it:

a) Every couple who makes over a million dollars a year and every single
taxpayer who makes over $500,000 a year will pay a 10% surcharge tax for
five years. (It's the Senator Sanders plan. He's like Colonel Sanders,
only he's out to fry the right chickens.) That means the rich will still
be paying less income tax than when Carter was president. This will
raise a total of $300 billion.

b) Like nearly every other democracy, charge a 0.25% tax on every stock
transaction. This will raise more than $200 billion in a year.

c) Because every stockholder is a patriotic American, stockholders will
forgo receiving a dividend check for one quarter and instead this money
will go the treasury to help pay for the bailout.

d) 25% of major U.S. corporations currently pay NO federal income tax.
Federal corporate tax revenues currently amount to 1.7% of the GDP
compared to 5% in the 1950s. If we raise the corporate income tax back
to the level of the 1950s, that gives us an extra $500 billion.

All of this combined should be enough to end the calamity. The rich will
get to keep their mansions and their servants, and our United States
government ("COUNTRY FIRST!") will have a little leftover to repair some
roads, bridges and schools.

3. BAIL OUT THE PEOPLE LOSING THEIR HOMES, NOT THE PEOPLE WHO WILL BUILD
AN EIGHTH HOME. There are 1.3 million homes in foreclosure right now.
That is what is at the heart of this problem. So instead of giving the
money to the banks as a gift, pay down each of these mortgages by
$100,000. Force the banks to renegotiate the mortgage so the homeowner
can pay on its current value. To insure that this help does no go to
speculators and those who have tried to make money by flipping houses,
this bailout is only for people's primary residence. And in return for
the $100K paydown on the existing mortgage, the government gets to share
in the holding of the mortgage so that it can get some of its money
back. Thus, the total initial cost of fixing the mortgage crisis at its
roots (instead of with the greedy lenders) is $150 billion, not $700
billion.

And let's set the record straight. People who have defaulted on their
mortgages are not "bad risks." They are our fellow Americans, and all
they wanted was what we all want and most of us still get: a home to
call their own. But during the Bush years, millions of them lost the
decent paying jobs they had. Six million fell into poverty. Seven
million lost their health insurance. And every one of them saw their
real wages go down by $2,000. Those who dare to look down on these
Americans who got hit with one bad break after another should be
ashamed. We are a better, stronger, safer and happier society when all
of our citizens can afford to live in a home that they own.

4. IF YOUR BANK OR COMPANY GETS ANY OF OUR MONEY IN A "BAILOUT," THEN WE
OWN YOU. Sorry, that's how it's done. If the bank gives me money so I
can buy a house, the bank "owns" that house until I pay it all back --
with interest. Same deal for Wall Street. Whatever money you need to
stay afloat, if our government considers you a safe risk -- and
necessary for the good of the country -- then you can get a loan, but we
will own you. If you default, we will sell you. This is how the Swedish
government did it and it worked.

5. ALL REGULATIONS MUST BE RESTORED. THE REAGAN REVOLUTION IS DEAD. This
catastrophe happened because we let the fox have the keys to the
henhouse. In 1999, Phil Gramm authored a bill to remove all the
regulations that governed Wall Street and our banking system. The bill
passed and Clinton signed it. Here's what Sen. Phil Gramm, McCain's
chief economic advisor, said at the bill signing:

"In the 1930s ... it was believed that government was the answer. It was
believed that stability and growth came from government overriding the
functioning of free markets.

"We are here today to repeal [that] because we have learned that
government is not the answer. We have learned that freedom and
competition are the answers. We have learned that we promote economic
growth and we promote stability by having competition and freedom.

"I am proud to be here because this is an important bill; it is a
deregulatory bill. I believe that that is the wave of the future, and I
am awfully proud to have been a part of making it a reality."

This bill must be repealed. Bill Clinton can help by leading the effort
for the repeal of the Gramm bill and the reinstating of even tougher
regulations regarding our financial institutions. And when they're done
with that, they can restore the regulations for the airlines, the
inspection of our food, the oil industry, OSHA, and every other entity
that affects our daily lives. All oversight provisions for any "bailout"
must have enforcement monies attached to them and criminal penalties for
all offenders.

6. IF IT'S TOO BIG TO FAIL, THEN THAT MEANS IT'S TOO BIG TO EXIST.
Allowing the creation of these mega-mergers and not enforcing the
monopoly and anti-trust laws has allowed a number of financial
institutions and corporations to become so large, the very thought of
their collapse means an even bigger collapse across the entire economy.
No one or two companies should have this kind of power. The so-called
"economic Pearl Harbor" can't happen when you have hundreds -- thousands
-- of institutions where people have their money. When you have a dozen
auto companies, if one goes belly-up, we don't face a national disaster.
If you have three separately-owned daily newspapers in your town, then
one media company can't call all the shots (I know... What am I
thinking?! Who reads a paper anymore? Sure glad all those mergers and
buyouts left us with a strong and free press!). Laws must be enacted to
prevent companies from being so large and dominant that with one
slingshot to the eye, the giant falls and dies. And no institution
should be allowed to set up money schemes that no one can understand. If
you can't explain it in two sentences, you shouldn't be taking anyone's
money.

7. NO EXECUTIVE SHOULD BE PAID MORE THAN 40 TIMES THEIR AVERAGE
EMPLOYEE, AND NO EXECUTIVE SHOULD RECEIVE ANY KIND OF "PARACHUTE" OTHER
THAN THE VERY GENEROUS SALARY HE OR SHE MADE WHILE WORKING FOR THE
COMPANY. In 1980, the average American CEO made 45 times what their
employees made. By 2003, they were making 254 times what their workers
made. After 8 years of Bush, they now make over 400 times what their
average employee makes. How this can happen at publicly held companies
is beyond reason. In Britain, the average CEO makes 28 times what their
average employee makes. In Japan, it's only 17 times! The last I heard,
the CEO of Toyota was living the high life in Tokyo. How does he do it
on so little money? Seriously, this is an outrage. We have created the
mess we're in by letting the people at the top become bloated beyond
belief with millions of dollars. This has to stop. Not only should no
executive who receives help out of this mess profit from it, but any
executive who was in charge of running his company into the ground
should be fired before the company receives any help.

8. STRENGTHEN THE FDIC AND MAKE IT A MODEL FOR PROTECTING NOT ONLY
PEOPLE'S SAVINGS, BUT ALSO THEIR PENSIONS AND THEIR HOMES. Obama was
correct yesterday to propose expanding FDIC protection of people's
savings in their banks to $250,000. But this same sort of government
insurance must be given to our nation's pension funds. People should
never have to worry about whether or not the money they've put away for
their old age will be there. This will mean strict government oversight
of companies who manage their employees' funds -- or perhaps it means
that the companies will have to turn over those funds and their
management to the government. People's private retirement funds must
also be protected, but perhaps it's time to consider not having one's
retirement invested in the casino known as the stock market. Our
government should have a solemn duty to guarantee that no one who grows
old in this country has to worry about ending up destitute.

9. EVERYBODY NEEDS TO TAKE A DEEP BREATH, CALM DOWN, AND NOT LET FEAR
RULE THE DAY. Turn off the TV! We are not in the Second Great
Depression. The sky is not falling. Pundits and politicians are lying to
us so fast and furious it's hard not to be affected by all the fear
mongering. Even I, yesterday, wrote to you and repeated what I heard on
the news, that the Dow had the biggest one day drop in its history.
Well, that's true in terms of points, but its 7% drop came nowhere close
to Black Monday in 1987 when the stock market in one day lost 23% of its
value. In the '80s, 3,000 banks closed, but America didn't go out of
business. These institutions have always had their ups and downs and
eventually it works out. It has to, because the rich do not like their
wealth being disrupted! They have a vested interest in calming things
down and getting back into the Jacuzzi.

As crazy as things are right now, tens of thousands of people got a car
loan this week. Thousands went to the bank and got a mortgage to buy a
home. Students just back to college found banks more than happy to put
them into hock for the next 15 years with a student loan. Life has gone
on. Not a single person has lost any of their money if it's in a bank or
a treasury note or a CD. And the most amazing thing is that the American
public hasn't bought the scare campaign. The citizens didn't blink, and
instead told Congress to take that bailout and shove it. THAT was
impressive. Why didn't the population succumb to the fright-filled
warnings from their president and his cronies? Well, you can only say
'Saddam has da bomb' so many times before the people realize you're a
lying sack of shite. After eight long years, the nation is worn out and
simply can't take it any longer.

10. CREATE A NATIONAL BANK, A "PEOPLE'S BANK." If we really are itching
to print up a trillion dollars, instead of giving it to a few rich
people, why don't we give it to ourselves? Now that we own Freddie and
Fannie, why not set up a people's bank? One that can provide
low-interest loans for all sorts of people who want to own a home, start
a small business, go to school, come up with the cure for cancer or
create the next great invention. And now that we own AIG, the country's
largest insurance company, let's take the next step and provide health
insurance for everyone. Medicare for all. It will save us so much money
in the long run. And we won't be 12th on the life expectancy list. We'll
be able to have a longer life, enjoying our government-protected
pension, and living to see the day when the corporate criminals who
caused so much misery are let out of prison so that we can help
reacclimate them to civilian life -- a life with one nice home and a
gas-free car that was invented with help from the People's Bank.

Yours,
Michael Moore

plan.

Hanging Pants Below the Ankles: A Discussion

[Muslims are inundated by a sort of post-colonial shame complex which seems to prevent them from adopting the sunnah in their outward dress. It is very sad that this sort of embarrassed-to-look-Muslim complex seems to have beat down our men much harder than our women, whose modesty is the pride of every believer, and whose hijab is indeed da'wah for everyone who sees it. We need to get over the shame pressure which forces us to try to fit in, and own up to who we are: Muslims. Our role-model is the messenger of Allah, Muhammad, the chosen one, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. People say that the messenger of Allah just dressed like the Arabs dressed in his time, so we should do the same. This is either ignorance or a lie from whoever says it, and possibly both. Our prophet's turban was not like that of the mushrikin, nor was his hat, sarong, shirt, cloak, or coat, to mention just a few things. In fact, he was noticeably different in his mubarak appearance than the people of jahiliyyah, the people of ignorance. He was different. He was special. He was the best of Allah's creation and the most beloved. He was the most beloved to Allah, and to the believers. He never worried about fitting in, because he brought something that was different. We are different. If we are not different and we do not bring something different, than what is the point of tiring ourselves and others with "islam" (as opposed to Islam) if we just want to come with our own brand of jahiliyyah?
Are you really so ashamed that you should look like a person of jannah? Will people make fun of you for wearing "flood-pants"? Those "flood-pants" are just another plank in the ark of the Sunnah. Build it. The flood is coming. Sayyiduna Nuh, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him said to his people, when they would pass him building his ark and mock him, that one day he would mock and laugh at them. The sunnah is the ark. The flood is coming...

'Isbaal' : Is Hanging Trousers Below the Ankles Impermissible Due to Pride? Answered by Mufti Mohammed Sajaad (of As-Suffa Institute)

Q) Is having it below the ankle in today's society that bad especially since wearing trousers/jeans (which go below the ankles) is normal? The ahadith prohibit wearing it with pride as doing anything with pride is haram. The majority of the fuqaha (including al-Nawawi, Ibn Hajar and the Hanafi jurists) have said to have it below the ankle without pride is makruh tanzihi/permissible with slight distaste. Only a few scholars have said otherwise e.g. Ibn Arabi al-Mailiki. This is from my reading anyway. So in this society when people wear it below the ankle is it convenient or even legally substantiated to condemn people for doing it?
ANSWER The idea that if a person does not have pride he can lower his garments below the ankles is incorrect. The truth is, with this ruling, regardless of whether a person has pride or not he must keep his garments above the ankles. Though, if accidentally and unintentionally they were to fall below the ankles there would be no sin upon the person (which also explains the hadith of Abu Bakr r.a.). However the ruling cannot be made to revolve around a person's own view about whether he has pride. This is because pride is a surreptitious thing. A person who is afflicted with this evil spiritual disease will, not only will never acknowledge he has pride, in fact in many cases, he will not even know. It is simply silly to think an individual will be able to assert about himself that: Yes I am free of pride thus I can keep the garments below the ankles. Yet this is the bizarre consequence of holding this view. The reality is that the ruling about having the garment above the ankles is one in which the Sabab (apparent cause) has been treated like the Illah (real underlying cause). Just as in travel, the dispensation to shorten the prayer was obviously given due to hardship. However, because it is difficult to always say when hardship is being met by the traveler, the cause for this ruling to shorten was not made the basis of this ruling, such that if a person did not find hardship, even when traveling a thousand miles, he could not shorten. Rather the apparent cause was made the cause for the ruling, namely travel. Thus wherever travel (48 miles) is found this ruling applies regardless of the extent of the hardship. (See Shaikh Taqi Uthmani's Takmilah Fath al-Mulhim, p122, vol.4) Similarly, in the case of the ruling of having garments above the ankles, because it is highly difficult to tell if a person has pride in this act, its apparent cause (garments above the ankles) was made the ruling's cause- rather than the real underlying cause (pride). Thus, it will be sinful every time a person intentionally lets his garments go below the ankles. The very act of Isbal being outlawed in this manner also tells us that this act in itself is a cause of creating pride. Imam Ibn Hajr, in Fath al-Bari, Kitab al-Libas, p.324 vol.10, writes: "Lowering the garments below the ankles must bring dragging the garment and dragging the garment must bring with it pride even if the wearer does not intend pride (Khuyula). This meaning is supported by the hadith narrated by Ahmad bin Manee, "...The Messenger of Allah , peace and blessings upon him, said: 'Beware of dragging the garment, for indeed this is from pride.' "
[Imam] Ibn Hajr then narrates the following hadith that emphatically show this ruling is not restricted to when this act is done in pride:
[1] In a hadith from Imam Tabarani, whose chain is sound, which is emphatic in this ruling not being restricted to when this act is done in pride. Namely, "The Messenger of Allah , peace and blessings upon him, struck four fingers of his hand below the knee (on the shin) and said: "O Amar (bin Zurarah)! this is the place of the garment." After citing this hadith, Imam Ibn Hajr writes: "It is obvious the aforementioned Amar did not intend pride in lowering his garment." [2] Also narrated by Tabarani, the Prophet, peace and blessing upon him, saw a man whose garments were below the ankles, he ordered him: "Raise your waist-wrap!" The man said: "I have an ailment in my legs; my knees collide with each other." He peace be upon him, replied: "Raise your garment because all of the creation of Allah is beautiful." Again, it is clear in this hadith this man was not doing this due to pride yet still he was ordered to raise his garments. [3] Ibn Majah, Nasai and Ibn Hibban narrate with a sound chain that: Mughirah ibn Shubah said: "I saw the Messenger of Allah , peace and blessings upon him, seized the wrap of Sufyan ibn Suhail, saying: 'O Sufyan do not lower garments below the ankles, verily Allah detests those who lower their garments below the ankles (Laa Tusbil fa-inna-allaha laa yuhibbu-l-Musbileen)." All three hadith are recorded in Fath al-Bari. It would be incorrect to think that the majority of the scholars hold, as you mentioned, that it is fine to lower garments below the ankles if there is no pride in it. Similarly, it also wrong and misleading to suggest the ruling of Tahreem (unlawfulness) is peculiar to the Indian scholars. [Imam] Ibn Hajr, himself a prominent Shafi jurist, records that Imam Shafi's position is that under all circumstances it will forbidden to allow the garment to go below the ankles; except that if it is with the absence of pride the sin gained will be less. However, there will be the sin of resembling women as their garments are to be below the ankles. Imam Hakim, with a sound chain narrates: "The Messenger of Allah , peace and blessings be upon him, cursed the man who wears women's clothes" (Op cit). Similarly, the Maliki jurist Ibn al-Arabi, affirming the above explanation of the threat of pride, states: "It is not permitted for a man to allow his garment to go beyond his ankle saying: 'I am not doing it in pride.' This is because the prohibition includes this by virtue of the wording. It is not permitted for a person who is being included in the ruling by the words (of a text) to say: 'I will not follow it because that reason (Illah) is not found in me,' for it is an unacceptable claim- rather his lowering his garment tells of his pride," (Op cit). Thus it will always be forbidden (Makruh Tahrimi) to allow the garment to go below the ankles and the Salah of a person in this manner will have to be repeated in its time. Although Shaikh Faraz Rabbani cites Fataawa Hindiyya, for his view that it is Makruh tanzihi without pride, on the same page of this work, strong words are used against this practice. It says on p.333 vol.5, that: "…lowering the waist wrap and the shirt below the ankles is a reprehensible innovation (Bidah). The garment should be above the ankles up to the middle of the shins." [After the initial reply was given to the question of the prohibition for men of lowering their garments, many questions were received questioning this ruling. The reply below is a second reply to answer these objections] The first point that was made was that this ruling is only so when done in pride. This point was actually answered in the first reply, nevertheless more proofs can be cited to leave no doubt that this ruling is not suspended on the existence of pride. The basis of this objection is the hadith that forbid Isbal mention that it is blameworthy when done in pride. However, there are also many hadith that prohibit this act irrelevant of the reason, suggesting this is supposed to be the dress of the believer at all times. I will record below the many hadith that clearly tell us that this ruling was not restricted to pride: i) The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), said: "There are three people Allah will not speak to on the Day of Judgement, nor will He look at them or purify them of their sins. For them will be a painful chastisement….The one who allows his garments to fall below the ankles, a person who recounts favours he has done to others and a person who sells his goods by a false oath." (Muslim) ii) The Messenger of Allah , peace and blessings upon him, said: "Beware of lowering the garment for it is from pride and Allah detests pride…" (Tirmidhi) This hadith tells us that actually this act in itself brings pride in a person. iii) The hadith in Sunnan Abu Dawud, hadith no.638, Bab al-Isbal fi al-Salah: Abu Hurairah narrates that: "A man was praying with his garment below his ankles when the Messenger of Allah , peace and blessings upon him, said: 'Go and repeat your Wudu.' So the man went and did his Wudu and returned. The Messenger (peace and blessings upon him) again said: 'Go and repeat your Wudu.' So the man went and repeated his Wudu and returned. The man asked: 'O Messenger of Allah what is it that you told him to do Wudu (again) and then you did not say anything?' The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) said: 'He was praying with his garment below his ankles, verily Allah (may His mention be magnified) does not accept the prayer of a man who lowers his garments.' " Some have challenged the authenticity of this hadith. The fact is the hadith is sound and has also been narrated by Imam Bayhaqi in his Sunnan, vol.2 p342, Kitab Karahiyyat Isbal al-Izar fi-Salah. Imam Nawawi in Riyad al-Salihin has confirmed that it is Sahih, hadith no.797. iv) The Messenger of Allah , peace and blessings upon him, said: "The waist-wrap of the Muslim must be up to the middle of the shins; and there is no harm if it goes between there and the ankles..." (Abu Dawud) Also note that the Sahaba never thought this ruling was restricted to if done in pride; they thought this was in fact the dress of the believing men. It is for this reason that, as Shaikh al-Hadith Muhammad Zakariyya writes in Awjaz al-Masaalik, vol.14 p220, Umm Salamah r.a. brought up the issue with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) having understood that the above hadith were not to be restricted to the case of pride, (i.e. this was the instructions for how dress in general should be) and as such applied to women as well. She asked the Messenger of Allah peace and blessings upon him) when he spoke about the lowering the garments, 'What about the woman O Messenger of Allah ?' This clearly shows she understood the condemnation for lowering the garment was general (Mutlaq) irrespective of pride. But she asked because women also had the order to cover their Awrah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) then elaborated for her that they were exempt from this ruling.
v) Ibn Umar r.a. narrates that: "I passed by the Messenger of Allah , peace and blessings be upon him, and my garment was loose, so he, peace and blessings upon him, said: 'O Abdullah raise your garment,' so I raised it. Then he said, 'more,' so I raised it more. Ever since then I have been vigilant regarding it." (Muslim) It was also wrongly argued that the Hanafi school actually does not hold that garments for men must be above the ankles always. Rather it was claimed, they say, if a person does not do this in pride then it is considered to be merely Makruh Tanzihi. The evidence they have cited for this is the view of Imam Badr al-Din al-Ayni and the same is also written in Fataawa Hindiyyah. The truth however is that in Umdat al-Qari, Imam Ayni, does not say this is the position of the Hanafi School. What can correctly be ascribed to Imam Al-Ayni are the following words explaining the heading in Sahih al-Bukhari: The Chapter of he who pulled his garment (below the ankles) without pride. Imam Ayni immediately after this wrote: "This chapter is to explain the ruling of that person who lowered his garment without the intention of pride, for there is no harm in it without any dislike…," vol.21 p295, Kitab al-Libas. Under the above heading the famous hadith in which Abu Bakr complains of his garment going below the ankles is mentioned, and in which the Prophet (peace and blessings upon him) says: "You are not from those who do it out of pride."
As can be seen from the context all that Imam Ayni is saying, which we of course accept, is that if unintentionally the garment goes below the ankles one need not worry that he has committed the great sin that lies in Isbal. But, this does not mean, and nor could it mean if the context is kept in view, that: A person is permitted to lower his garment if he thinks he is not doing it in pride. The second source some people have used to claim this erroneous view, that if a person does not do it in pride he is blameless, is Fataawa Hindiyyah. The text is also said to say without pride this act is Makruh Tanzihi. However again it seems this is a misrepresentation of the facts. In this work the text does say: "…If it is not done in pride then it is Makruh Tanzihi…," Ninth chapter on Clothing, vol.5 p333. Those who quote this however fail to mention that the very sentence before this said: "Raising up the garments is Sunna and lowering the garments below the ankles is a reprehensible innovation (Bidah). The garment should be above the ankles up to half way of the shins..." This text is emphatic in stating the evil of this act and its being always impermissible. And, again one can clearly tell from the context, that the jurists mentioned the ruling of Tanzihi (which technically means there is no sin upon a person for doing that act), for that case when it is done unintentionally or for a need- to simply outline that there is no sin. As mentioned earlier one may not lower his garment without a need. To do so claiming that one does not have pride is simply distorting the Shariah. For the best of generations, Sahaba, Tabi'een and Taba' Tabi'een, never ever played with the words of the hadith in this manner. Not one from them understood this ruling in this way such that a single one of them (though if anyone could be free of pride it was them) asserted, "I will keep my garments below the ankles as I am free of pride."
Had there been some leeway in this regard in the Shariah they would never have been so careful regarding it to the point that they would prevent others from doing it. Yet they appreciated more than us that one should have good opinions about others and not judge their intentions. In other words it was not just left to personal opinion about whether one had pride or not. We see Umar r.a., having been fatally wounded, on his death bed stop a young man who had his garment below the ankles and commanded him to raise it. So how can this attitude be given any credence today? Especially, when we see many men today, not desiring to raise their garments above the ankles and looking down upon those who do. For them, it is obvious, the motivation in not raising their garments is shame, and the greater respect and prestige they feel in wearing the garments below the ankles, all of which is a symptom of that surreptitious disease called pride. If the reason for this ruling was pride such that if it is done without it then there is no blame, then are we really saying our judgment about our internal state is better than that of the likes of Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali (r.a.) who all would keep their garments above their ankles?
